Free Things to Do in Denver

By Eventism TeamLast verified Oct 22, 2026 Editor-curated

Denver is quietly one of the best free cities in America, and it's not an accident: voters here tax themselves through the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) to fund culture, and the payback is a standing calendar of free days at the art museum, the science museum, the zoo, and the botanic gardens. Layer on the always-free stuff — Red Rocks on a non-concert day, tours of the State Capitol and the U.S. Mint, a summer of free concerts at Levitt Pavilion — and you can fill a Denver weekend for exactly $0 without doing anything sad.

The catch is that 'free' in Denver runs on rules. Some free days are walk-up; some need an online ticket that drops two weeks out and vanishes in hours; the Mint requires a reservation even though the ticket costs nothing. Every card below states its mechanism plainly — what's free, when, and what you have to do to get it — because the only disappointing free day is the one you show up to wrong.

Coming up fast: Night at the Museums, Saturday, November 7, 2026 (5–10 PM, Denver Arts Week), when some 18 museums across the city open free in one evening with a free shuttle between them — the single best free night of the Denver year.

When you're ready to spend a little, the natural upgrades live in our own network: a free First Friday pairs with the after-hours scene in Denver Date Night Ideas, the free-day museum crawl ends well at the spots in Best Coffee Shops in Denver, and the celebratory pint after a $0 day belongs to Best Breweries in Denver.

The list

12 editor-verified spots

Denver Art Museum

Golden Triangle, Denver
Denver Art Museum — photo 1
  • Location: Golden Triangle — 100 W 14th Ave Pkwy

  • Best for: Free museum day / family outing

  • Why we recommend: GA free on 12 SCFD Free Days in 2026 — next up Sat Nov 7 and Tue Dec 8 (full list: Jan 13, Feb 10, Mar 10, Apr 26, May 12, Jun 9, Jul 14, Aug 1, Sep 12, Oct 13, Nov 7, Dec 8). Free days = general admission only; special exhibitions extra. Admission free EVERY DAY for visitors 18 and younger (Free for Kids program). The DAM free day is the one to build a free Saturday around: arrive at opening, do the Hamilton Building top-down, and let the kids run the interactive spaces that are free with general admission anyway. If you have anyone 18 or under in the group, remember they don't need a free day at all — they're in free on the Tuesday you just happen to be downtown. Book timed entry online when it's offered for free days; the popular ones queue.

Denver Museum of Nature & Science — photo 1
  • Location: City Park — 2001 Colorado Blvd

  • Best for: No-planning free day / free evening out

  • Why we recommend: GA free on 12 SCFD dates in 2026 (days + free evenings) — next up Sat Nov 7 (evening 5–10 PM, Night at the Museums) and Mon Nov 16. NO ticket or advance reservation needed — walk up (museum states this explicitly). Covers permanent exhibitions/Wildlife Halls; Infinity Theater and planetarium are separate paid tickets. DMNS is the free day for people who hate planning free days. Circle Mon Nov 16 or the Nov 7 free evening, walk in, and spend the money you saved on exactly nothing else — the permanent halls are a full afternoon on their own. Free evenings are the sleeper pick: the crowds skew adult, the Wildlife Halls at dusk are atmospheric, and City Park is right outside for the walk home.

Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre — photo 1
  • Location: Morrison (metro pick, ~25 min west) — 18300 W Alameda Pkwy

  • Best for: Sunrise hike / free outdoor morning

  • Why we recommend: Admission AND parking free on NON-event days — walk the amphitheatre seats, hike trails, Visitor Center and Trading Post free. Open one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset on non-event days; on event days the amphitheatre typically closes to daytime visitors around 2 PM. Concerts/films are ticketed — this card is about the park. Go early on a weekday when there's no show: run the stairs if you're that person, walk the 1.4-mile Trading Post Trail through the red sandstone fins if you're not, and save the Visitor Center's music exhibits for last. The only rule that matters is checking the event calendar before you drive out — an afternoon closure for a sold-out concert is the one way this free trip goes wrong.

Denver Botanic Gardens

Cheesman Park, Denver
Denver Botanic Gardens — photo 1
  • Location: Cheesman Park — 1007 York St

  • Best for: Ticket-drop free day / holiday-season visit

  • Why we recommend: GA free on 8 SCFD Free Days in 2026 — last of the year: Fri Nov 27 (day after Thanksgiving). ADVANCE ONLINE REGISTRATION REQUIRED — free tickets released on the 1st of the month, three months at a time; they sell out; no onsite tickets for sold-out days. Free days cover regular hours only — Glow at the Gardens and Blossoms of Light NOT included. Treat this one like a ticket drop, because it is one: put the 1st of the month on your calendar, grab the free timed tickets the morning they release, and don't assume you can decide the week of. The Nov 27 date is the locals' favorite — out-of-town family is here, the gardens are quiet and sculptural, and the conservatory is the warmest room in Denver.

Denver Zoo

City Park, Denver
Denver Zoo — photo 1
  • Location: City Park — 2300 Steele St

  • Best for: Family free day (book the morning tickets drop)

  • Why we recommend: Free on 7 Community Free Days in 2026 — remaining: Wed Nov 11, Sat Nov 14, Sun Nov 22. Tickets ONLINE ONLY, released ~14 days ahead, first-come first-served, NO walk-ups. November drops: Oct 28 (for Nov 11), Oct 31 (for Nov 14), Nov 8 (for Nov 22). Up to 5 tickets per registration; every guest incl. children 2 and under needs a timed ticket. Rides/4D Theater not included. The zoo's free days reward exactly one behavior: being online the morning tickets release. Set the reminder for Oct 28, Oct 31, or Nov 8, book the earliest entry slot (animals are most active in the morning and the day stays civilized), and treat the rest as a normal zoo trip. Do not drive over hoping for gate tickets — on free days there are none, by design.

Colorado State Capitol

Capitol Hill, Denver
Colorado State Capitol — photo 1
  • Location: Civic Center/Capitol Hill — 200 E Colfax Ave

  • Best for: Best free hour downtown / dome climb

  • Why we recommend: Guided tours free Mon–Fri on the hour 10 AM–3 PM, first-come first-served, capped at 30; check in at the Visitor Information Desk (first floor, north side). ~1-hour tour includes the dome (99-step climb, stairs only). Building open for self-guided visits Mon–Fri 7:30 AM–5 PM; dome is guided-tour-only. Closed state holidays. This is the best free hour in downtown Denver, full stop. Take the guided tour rather than wandering — the dome climb is the payoff, and you can't do it self-guided. Aim for the 10 AM tour on a clear day, when the Front Range fills the observation windows, then walk across Civic Center Park and make a free-day doubleheader of it with the art museum a few blocks south.

U.S. Mint at Denver

Downtown, Denver
U.S. Mint at Denver — photo 1
  • Location: Downtown — 320 W Colfax Ave

  • Best for: Free tour (reserve a month out)

  • Why we recommend: Tour completely free, Mon–Thu (except federal holidays) at 7:30 AM, 9 AM, 10:30 AM, 12 PM, 1:30 PM, 3 PM. RESERVATION REQUIRED — online only, in-person tickets no longer exist; reservations open up to 30 days ahead, released 1 AM Mountain Time; max 5 tickets per request; visitors must be age 7+. Tour about an hour; bring photo ID; airport-style security; leave bags behind. The Mint is Denver's most underrated free ticket and its most procedural: the whole game is the 30-day reservation window, so decide your date a month out and book the morning slot before they go. Pair it with the Capitol two blocks east — free civic Denver, back to back, with lunch money still in your pocket because you never spent any.

Levitt Pavilion Denver

Ruby Hill, Denver
Levitt Pavilion Denver — photo 1
  • Location: Ruby Hill Park — 1380 W Florida Ave

  • Best for: Free summer concerts on the lawn

  • Why we recommend: Summer season late May–September built on FREE all-ages concerts (~40 free shows in 2026; venue counts 50+ free concerts/community events per summer). First-come on the lawn; free RSVP online or walk in while capacity lasts. Honest exception: a handful of TICKETED shows each season — check the specific night's listing. The 2026 season has wrapped; the next free lineup typically posts in spring. Levitt is the free thing Denver locals actually organize summers around: blanket down by 6, food trucks along the top of the lawn, kids running the hill, and a headliner most cities would charge $40 for. The 2026 season has wrapped; the next free lineup typically posts in spring — when it does, RSVP the big names early, because the lawn does fill for the marquee nights.

First Friday Art Walk — Art District on Santa Fe — photo 1
  • Location: Lincoln Park — Santa Fe Drive, 600–1100 blocks

  • Best for: Free monthly art night / date night

  • Why we recommend: First Friday of every month, galleries/studios open free, generally 5:30–9:30 PM. Museo de las Americas (861 Santa Fe Dr) is free on First Fridays and always free for children 13 and under. Food trucks/drinks cost money; the art doesn't. First Friday is the free date, the free friend night, and the free solo wander all at once: start at 6th and Santa Fe, work north, duck into every open door, and let the Museo anchor the south end. The November and December walks double as holiday markets. Arrive before 7 for gallery conversation; arrive after 8 for the full carnival.

Clyfford Still Museum

Golden Triangle, Denver
Clyfford Still Museum — photo 1
  • Location: Golden Triangle — 1250 Bannock St

  • Best for: Quiet free museum day / art lovers

  • Why we recommend: Free on 5 SCFD Free Days in 2026 — last of the year: Sat Nov 7 (free 10 AM–10 PM for Night at the Museums). Reserve free tickets online about a week ahead (released in advance, recommended). Children/teens 17 and under free EVERY day. IMPORTANT: the museum's monthly Pay-What-You-Wish days are NOT free days — do not present them as free. Still is the connoisseur's free day: small, quiet, and overwhelming in person — the canvases are enormous and the building gives them silence. The Nov 7 free day is the move, because it pairs with a free DAM day next door for a two-museum, zero-dollar Golden Triangle doubleheader that runs into the Night at the Museums evening.

Colorado Music Hall of Fame — photo 1
  • Location: Downtown, Colorado Convention Center (Bellco Theatre lobby) — 700 14th St

  • Best for: Always-free quick museum stop

  • Why we recommend: Admission ALWAYS FREE. Access caveat: exhibits are open to the public during Convention Center conventions/events and Bellco Theatre performances — no standalone daily museum hours yet; check cmhof.org before a special trip. Most Denverites walked past this for a decade without knowing it existed — partly because it moved. The Hall of Fame left its old Red Rocks Trading Post home in 2025, and the Convention Center version is bigger and growing. If you're downtown for anything at the Bellco, arrive twenty minutes early and take the free museum as your opening act.

Hammond's Candies

North Denver, Denver
Hammond's Candies — photo 1
  • Location: North Denver — 5735 Washington St

  • Best for: Free factory tour / kids outing

  • Why we recommend: Complimentary ~30-min factory tours Mon–Fri (9:15 AM–2:45 PM) and Sat (9:15 AM–2:15 PM), departing about every half hour; small groups walk in, no reservation; groups of 10+ call ahead; tour ends with a free piece of candy. This is the free tour Denver grandparents have been taking kids to for generations, and it holds up: short enough for a toddler's patience, interesting enough for adults, and the hairnet-and-hot-candy theater of it is pure old Denver. Go on a weekday morning when production is at full tilt, and time it near the holidays if you want to see candy cane season running at capacity.
